September

It is hard to believe we have been in school for a month already!  We are having so much fun getting to know each other and work very hard!  The first 2 weeks of school were spent focusing on procedures, expectations, and determining how your child learns best.  The grades at this time reflect review from 2nd grade, guided practice, and some independent practice of new skills.  If you have questions or concerns about the progress your child is making please don’t hesitate to call and set up a time to meet.

This week we started small guided reading groups.  We focus on what good readers do each time we read:

-Set a purpose

-Make connections

-Make prediction

I also began sending home reading passages for homework this week.  Monday is reading non-fiction, Tuesday is reading fiction, and Wednesday is The Daily News.  There are questions that go along with each passage that are attached.

In math we are working on rounding.  When your child is completing their homework first ask them to write the place value at the top of their sheet and show their work by drawing a number line.  This is how we solve them in class and on quizzes/tests they will be showing their work! 🙂

We set up a year long experiment during the introduction to our soil unit in science.  We planted 2 different types of seeds and went through the scientific method for the experiment.  Our seeds sprouted by Friday and everyone was very excited! TBA what the seeds are….. 🙂

we continue our geography unit in social studies.  We are identifying major geographic features of the United States and Virginia.  There are a ton of great resources online that we have been using in class!

Keep checking back for more updates!
